Our summer days in Washington can get hot, and driving in heat is oppressive. Your Nissan AC is designed to deliver cold air on demand and make those hot days bearable. As time passes, AC systems and components will become worn or damaged, and the AC will malfunction. As your Nissan dealer, we want to tell you some signs you need to visit us for AC maintenance.
Signs You Need AC Maintenance at Your Nissan Dealer
Moldy Smell
If you turn on the AC and a moldy, earthy smell fills the cabin, your AC has a bacteria infestation. During a Washington winter, the AC’s lack of use can cause bacteria to build up on the air filter and in the ducts. The AC system is dark and damp, and combined with the lack of air movement, provides the perfect circumstances for bacteria to thrive.
We add an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal cleaning solution to the AC and then run it on full power. This blows the solution throughout the system and rapidly removes the infestation. Your AC will blow clean-smelling cold air again in no time.
Damaged Compressor
The compressor is the most important component in the AC system. It converts liquid refrigerant back into a gas, allowing it to circulate through the system. It also pushes air through the system, so the moisture can be removed, chilled, and blown into your cabin. If the compressor isn’t working, the AC can’t function, and your cabin won’t be cold.
One of the main causes of compressor failure is a broken compressor clutch. The clutch switches the compressor on and off to move the refrigerant through the system. A compressor can also fail if it’s damaged by stones or other hard objects thrown up from the road or runs with a low refrigerant level for a long period. We can replace the damaged clutch to fix the compressor or replace the compressor if it’s been seriously damaged.
Electrical Issues
The AC system depends on electricity like most systems in your Nissan. As the crankshaft turns, it causes the alternator belt to run across a series of pulleys. The belt’s movement spins the compressor’s pulley to power the compressor. Electrical wiring links the AC system components like the evaporator, condenser, and others to the alternator, which generates electricity for the system.
Wiring can become fragile over time and break, cutting off power to one or more AC components. Each AC component has a fuse, and a blown fuse will shut down the affected component until it’s replaced. A jammed compressor pulley will prevent the AC from working until it’s fixed. Our technicians will find the cause of the trouble and fix it.
